It was a mixture of light classical and musical comedy pieces as well as popular waltzes--all from the Edwardian period. To cover what might have been available to the steerage class passengers, Ian has invented a ragtime ensemble, The Musical Murrays, who play the pop,rag and music hall songs of the period-- on banjo, piano and accordion. This CD was released in and was a sensation all over the world.

The Hollywood Blue Flames emerged from the smoldering embers of The Hollywood Fats Band, arguably the best young blues band to come out of the s, led by guitar phenomenon Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann. Along with bassist Larry Taylor fresh from Canned Heat , drummer Richard Innes ex-Rod Piazza , Lloyd Glenn protege Fred Kaplan on piano, and featuring the multi-talented Al Blake on harmonica and vocals, Hollywood Fats almost single-handedly ignited a traditional blues revival that still echoes loudly to this day.
Whenever you hear the warm retro sounds of classic Chicago blues coupled with a swinging rhythm section and tasty-but-nasty guitar, you're hearing the legacy of the Hollywood Fats Band.
Willie was a singing drummer with a voice right out of a gravel pit and a loose, pure Chicago shuffle. Musically the guitar and voice is beautiful and unadorned-- Fred Below on percussion is an added highlight. The third LP issued by the then-fledgling Chicago label Alligator Records is gloriously messy, lo-fi, funky, and in-your-face. Son had a way of rhythmic phrasing that gave his notes incredible impact over and over again. His band and production got slicker as he went along, and he made a lot of great records, but this is the one that does it for me.

This is a swinging Oakland band drawing on the huge blues talent pool there, spearheaded by the blues great Lowell Fulson. This unhinged blast of gutbucket guitar and soul machismo is kind of the Texas version of the Son Seals record listed above, with horns, swinging tempos and a soul influence.
